Design 3: The Urban Living Studio
Fall 2014
The focus of this studio was designing for the urban environment. Students examined the role of both building and landscape in the urban situation of Northern Liberties, Philadelphia. In addition to completing two case studies regarding this focus, students were tasked with completing both a residential and a live-work situation split between two projects.
The first precedent study for the studio focused on efficient housing design in an urban context. Examining Paul Cremoux's Casa CorManca in Mexico City enabled a more in-depth examination of housing on the chosen site in Philadelphia.
Following the precedent study was an in-depth socio-economic examination of the section of Philadelphia in which the studio's projects would fall. The analysis included street and traffic patterns, land and building usage, pedestrian thoroughfares, and public institutions such as parks and mass transit.

Additional credit for the site context examination goes to Marisa Mines, Christopher Hreniuk, Rachel Thode, and Zachary Robertson.
After completing the precedent study and site area analysis, the next task was to design a pair of modern rowhomes for a triangular site at the corner of Laurel and Hancock Streets in Northern Liberties. The rowhomes were to be designed out of discarded cargo containers.
After completing the residential project, the studio undertook another precedent study - this time of a live-work music school. Examining the Cork Institute of Technology's School of Music in Cork, Ireland enabled greater knowledge and exploration into the somewhat unfamiliar forms of a music school.

Additional credit for the precedent study goes to Rachel Thode.
After a thorough investigation through the precedent study, it was time once again to design. The studio undertook a 22,000 square-foot build of a live-work music school on a site adjacent to that of the previous project. The school had to house administrative offices, classrooms, practice and rehearsal spaces, and studio apartments to house 24 students.
